Okay for clarity we need you to define what you mean by:

Film (do you mean 35 mm film?)
SD (Secure Digital memory card?)
Scanner (film scanner, flatbed scanner?)
By canister, do you mean a 35 mm cassette?
Do you mean that you have a cassette of film and you have yet to have it developed?

My guess is you shot a roll of 35 mm film and want to what? Turn them into digital files?

If you do, just ask the lab to provide you with a high quality CD of the images as well as the typical 4x6 inch prints.

Dedicated film scanners are expensive, time-consuming and they require a certain amount of expertise (and maybe extra software) to get the best results.

If you only have a few negs it may pay you to outsource the scanning.

Go to your local photofinisher and ask for a few high-res scans of your negs.

If you're not satisfied, then go shopping for your own equipment.

Hope this helps.

Scan Cafe. They have the very lowest price, yet very high quality. I HAVE used them so I know for a fact of the quality. They use Nikon Coolscan film scanners. The scanning is done in India, but do not let that worry you. It is a first class service that even has a one thousand dollar guarantee against anything going wrong. Check out the site. Take my word for it, this would be your best bet on a cost per quality basis. it takes about 8 weeks to get everything back.
